Introduction to Reggio Emilia learning approaches
Reggio Emilia early childhood and primary schools, have number of similarities to Montessori schools. However, there are a few significant differences between the two. Reggio Emilia approaches to teaching, were developed by Loris Malaguzzi, who was a teacher living in Reggio Emilia. Unlike in a Montessori school where the learning is focused around the individual, and structured around a pre-determined curriculum framework. Reggio Emilia schools are focused around social constructivist ideas, where children should devote a lot of time connecting with others, and learning with others in a social environment. (Dodd-Nufrio, 2011.). There is much emphasis put on the idea that the role of the teacher shouldn't be to transfer knowledge directly to the children. There should be as much opportunity as possible, allowing the children to be capable and self-directed learners. With the environment playing a critical role in providing an effective culture and opportunities for knowledge to be developed. (Dodd-Nufrio, 2011.). Great importance is placed on the effectiveness of social interactions, which are extended to the children’s families and greater community.
